6/12: New Island Adventure!

Alas, we awoke on the morning of June 12 to our last terrace breakfast! Rumi brought us fruit, waffles, scrambled eggs and Greek sausage courtesy of Tony for our final morning. It was the most delicious way anyone's ever said goodbye to me.

With the remainder of morning, we packed up our luggage--Annie took great care to ensure our seashells were safely stored. We had to vacate the room by 1:30, with our taxi arriving at 5:15, so we had some time to kill. Our baggage secured, we went shopping through Oia for gifts. We won't divulge what and for whom in order to preserve any surprises, but in case you're wondering, it's not for you.

We give you the gift of Aegean beauty.

With a few hours remaining, we made our way back to the Lioyerma pool for some shaded lounging. We enjoyed the cliffside breeze beneath the thatched umbrellas with a refreshing and overpriced frappé. At around 4pm, we set off for Kastro, a popular caldera cafe/restaurant, for a light lunch. We split a Greek salad and Coke, relaxing while shaded from the scorching afternoon sun.

The hour was soon upon us, so we found Tony, followed our trusty donkey taxi to the cab, loaded our baggage, and said our goodbyes. Rumi had earlier promised to save us a room for next summer, and the parting with Tony made us wish we could return, and soon.

The taxi dropped us at the busy Athinios Port, where we boarded a Superjet hydrofoil to Milos by way of Folegandros. It was a mere two hours' trip, and we arrived in Milos right at sunset, docking in Adamas where our caretaker Beatrix met us and walked us to our lodging at nearby Studios Helios.

Hardwood ceilings! The definition of luxury!

We had a top-floor (3rd story) studio with a small private balcony and harbor view. It was quite spacious with bedroom, living area, kitchenette, and bathroom. The best part was its close proximity to the harbor-side restaurants and cafes.

After unloading our baggage, we went walking towards the restaurants, noting how modern and posh many of them appeared. We stumbled upon an outdoor film in the main square of town, then found a Greek Orthodox ceremony being conducted outside the Ecclesiastical Museum. We could hear the chants of the Divine Liturgy, and it appeared a table loaded with holy bread was being blessed at the center of the group.

We ate dinner at Navágio Fish Tavern, a waterside restaurant slightly away from the trendier area. We ate bread, crab salad, spaghetti, and chicken souvlaki. 28€

With full bellies, we returned to our "new home" completely exhausted, mustering just enough strength to shower before passing out.
